Dr. Meleeka Clary
First of all we want to thank you for answering these questions. It is a pleasure to interview you. We are going to divide the interview into two parts. The first part we will talk about your project and in the second part we would like to know your cinematographic preferences.
How did you start this project. How long did it take from the initial idea to have it finished?
Answer: I started with an idea of needing my voice to be heard. There were obstacles happening in my personal life. Therefore, the only recourse of action was to allow the world to hear and feel my pain. It took me 9 years to complete.
Has it been a self-financed project or did you find private financing?
Answer: My family helped, and I found private funding.
Many filmmakers finance the entire project, finishing it in their spare time while studying or working etc. This makes it a very wear-and-tear process and takes a long time to finish. Even many of these projects never end up being assembled. In your case, how has the process been?
Answer: The process has been extremely exhausting and time consuming. There were some actors, actresses and camera members that did not take my project sincerely, because the movie was an independent movie verses a Sony project. However, I stayed close to my faith “God” and prayed about it that I can find the strength to keep going forward.
At what point is the project in terms of festivals? Tell us a little about your experience in festivals and what you expect from festivals for this project.
Answer: “Three Corners of Deception Movie” has won over 34 awards, 3 Finalist, 21 Semi-Finalist, 7 Nominee and 11 official Selection. I would say the project is doing well in the film festival circuit. My expectations are to be acknowledged as a filmmaker from the prestigious festivals.
Tell us the best moment and the worst experienced during the process of finishing the project.
Answer: My best moment was once I completed my passion movie, I felt rejoiced. That feeling was exonerating of joy. What, not allowing anyone to deter me from seeing my vision come to life was the best feeling I have ever felt. The worst experience was knowing and feeling that there are bad actors, actresses and camera members that tried to take advantage of one purpose.
Do you have any other project in mind? If so, can you tell us something?
Answer: Yes, “The Boston Girls” it is based on true events, which involves 5 girls who goes through many obstacles during there upbringing.
What do you expect from a film festival? Where do you think they should improve?
Answer: I expect them to review my project like everyone else. I think more feedback on why one’s project does not meet the needs for the festival in question. I say that because many filmmakers could benefit from constructive criticism.
Now we would like to know more about you.
How did you start in the cinema?
Answer: I started as model, actress and dancer first.
How do you define yourself as a filmmaker? Your best virtue and your worst flaw?
Answer: I am amateur regarding filmmaker because I never made a movie or directed one before “Three Corners of Deception”. My best virtue is that I see the best in a situation first. My worst flaw is once I think I can do something about how I am feeling regarding my situation, I am eager to complete the task. That maybe looks like flaws for others because “why” one wants to spend several years completing a project that is taking money out of one’s pocketbook. Here I am with my righteousness and flawless attitude.
